THE STATUE

It was two years back that I went to that place. It was a small village in the middle of cotton fields. The village when viewed through my bus window, you could see a small land piece surrounded by hills on all sides with a pond in the middle of the land. The main occupation of the village men was agriculture or the village men were relying mostly on cotton production. They have to wait for the exact season in a year when they are required to harvest cotton. At the end of the season the people used to remove the cotton from the plants and to market them to villages at their reach. They were also relying on the village fairs that were conducted every week at far off places and for other facilities they were relying on a town at about 3 miles away. There were no other facilities like good schools or good hospitals for the small children of the village men except the village heads who were quite finantially strong who lead their loved ones to schools and hostels in the town.So life became difficult for the people who relied on cotton production.I stayed for about a long term in this place at that time .There is a small story to tell about that village.
I was staying in the village in one of the village heads houses at that time when i had some chores with the panchayat. The village heads usually met every day near the palm trees which were planted very recently and which added more coolness to the place. It was a beautiful place which the village heads used to meet to talk over or judge over any village issues. At that time the issue was regarding the statue and it was under great explanation from the village men who were so superstitious and said that the statue was not a good sign in the middle of the schoolground and to be let out free as playground for big boys. But there was a postmaster very close to the village heads house who was so strong in saving the school and the statue .
It was an old school which was of many generations and after many years it was given authority for small children to study there. There was the small statue in the middle of the schoolground. It was kept exactly at about 20 years ago by a poor freedom fighter. He had kept the statue of a women who had died in the freedom struggle.I came to know that the village heads did not allow a women statue in the school and also tried to demolish it.But after long coaxing from the village postmaster who prevented the statue being demolished and after many panchayats it was given authority for the safety of the statue for just one conditition that it would be used for keeping their spun cotton bundles near the statue by building four walls surrounding the statue and to be used as a stock room .Slowly after many years it was given over to many generations and luckily handed over to teachers and later the staue with the four walls was converted to a school stage.
Thus after many years it became a girls school and still now the village heads did not agree to the condition that there was a lady statue in the school. There came a very draught season and people of the village were at risk. Many planned to go to other villages to save themselves and their families from the draught and all the villagers were winded away to neighbouring villages. But I and the postmaster were still staying there at that time in the village with few good headed villlge headmen. We were talking about renovating the school and to make it a bigger school for many people from other villages also to come and study there. It so happened that after the draught the season changed and it became a heavy rain season. All the village people regained their lost vision and returned back to the village to continue their cotton harvesting. After few months everything was fertile and people were very happy until there was a great rain which crashed the whole of the village and it was surrounded on all sides by water. There was no way for the village heads to save themselves from rain except to use the school stage as their dwell. All the preventable harvests were cut and all the worthy items were saved and brought to sheltor in the schoolstage.I was the one witnessing the event with the same plight as that of the village men.
After 5 days the rain ceased and people were at risk like they could catch diseases.sO I accompanied the postmaster and tried to swim across the waters and tried to reach the neighbouring villges by walking on the soaked sands to ask for help. After 2 hours we returned with the neighbourhood villagers and their food and medicines that saved every individual of that village, whether rich or poor. Thus 2 days was spent to make the village people to regain their lost life .
After few days the village turned to normalcy and life went almost smooth like the previous days.More harvests and more results.People started to cross their village boundaries in order to keep friendly terms with the neighbourhood villages and then they realized how they had kept their small and dear ones as lazy ones instead of making them to study like any other kids in town. Then there came an unavoidable situation for the village heads to realize the importance of a school and medical care in the village when i was given the authority to establish the duo.I with the help of the postmaster took all the possible steps to make all arrangements to clean the previous school and at last made it to a big school out of it with the school stage which held the statue.
After the day it was opened up to a new school and the village heads held up a panchayat in order to discuss about this renovation. And they felt bad for their previous acts and now condemned all the superstitious beliefs of a lady in the statue and also praised the lion lady for having saved them from heavy rains and made up their minds to allow their girl children to study there. Thus the lion lady who lost her life in the freedom struggle became the first lady in the minds of small children who were given the badge which holds the symbol of the lady and were taught to live like her.Till now the school stands as a symbol for the village men and their children.Later the village bacame the exact place for even other neighbourhood villagers who planned to make their kids to study in that village.
Thus satisfied with changes in the minds of the village heads i returned to my town.Still now if i find time i used to visit the village and stay there with the village man.
There is enough place in this earth for all but still man searches for the right one. There still exists diferences in all minds born as humans. But some reach the summit make others to live.Whatever may be nature, whatever may be it's roars ,it does proves if man is ready to save others like his ownones then will be the day did we really got freedom....
